A Decent Square

Matt sat in his wheelchair, posture looser than she remembered. The shadows under his eyes were still there, but lighter.

A small, uneven square of duct tape lay on the nightstand.

“I have to ask,” she teased, holding it up. “What is this? Some kind of DIY project?”

Seeing the square, his expression eased.

“Not exactly.”

She turned it over, taking in the folds and frayed edges.

“Did Ben leave this? Looks like his handiwork.”

“No, it’s mine.”

That pulled her up. She looked at him again.

“Yours?”

He nodded. Didn’t explain.

“Well, it’s... creative. Duct tape therapy?”

“Something like that.”

“It’s been helping, though?”

His fingers drifted along the armrest.

“...It’s something to hold onto.”

She rested a hand on his arm. He let her. Maybe it landed the way she meant.

“I’m glad you’ve got something. I know it’s... been hard.”

“...It was Ben’s idea.”

“Of course it was. I swear, that man could find a way to fix anything with duct tape.”

“Yeah. Guess he’s not completely useless.”

Lucy thought she’d caught a smile.

“You know, you don’t have to hold it all together by yourself. If it starts coming apart, just hand me the tape.”

Matt met her gaze this time.

“Thanks,” he murmured.

“Anytime.” She gave him a squeeze. “And for the record, it’s a pretty decent square.”
