Merge Conflict
The study room was chaos. Printouts and soda cans covered the table, along with an explosion of snacks in every direction.
“It’s not my fault the code doesn’t work,” Jason said, typing furiously. “The logic made sense when I copied it.”
“From where?” Sarah asked.
“Here. Forum post. Look, tons of replies.”
“Wait,” Danny said. “This is from denvercoder9?”
“Yeah?”
“That handle’s a red flag. Anything he posts comes with collateral damage.”
“Jason,” Sarah said, “this loop doesn’t even terminate. He’s not helping, he’s setting traps.”
“Well, maybe someone else should’ve done it!”
No one answered. Mark, their supposed group leader, kept playing his Flash game.
An hour in, and they were still going nowhere.
What would Matt do?
“Alright, enough,” he said, standing up.
The room went quiet. Even Mark looked over.
“We’re sticking to the plan. Jason, fix your loops. Sarah, handle the input validation. Mark, write the documentation. I’ll debug everything tomorrow if you get your parts done.”
“Who made you leader?”
He summoned every ounce of authority he could muster.
“If you were leading, I wouldn’t have to. Now do your part, or get out of the way.”
Danny wondered if he’d gone too far. Then Sarah started typing. Jason complained, Mark rolled his eyes, and code began moving again.
“Stick to the plan,” he muttered.
When the others filtered out of the study room, Danny stayed behind with his phone open in his hand.
“You’re just a kid.”
Lucy meant to protect him, but it only made him feel useless. Matt was drowning, and no one even considered he could help.
He set the phone aside.
What would Matt do?
His cousin would focus on the problem in front of him.
Danny turned back to the code.
