The Matchmaker

Ben should have known something was up the moment Lucy eyed him like she had a plan, and Matt already wore the face that said it wasn’t his problem.

“So, Ben,” she started. “I was thinking—”

“No,” he said immediately.

“—you should really start dating.”

“I do fine.”

“Uh-huh. Name one person I’ve seen you with. And don’t say Matt.”

“Rude,” Matt said. “I’m right here.”

“Not helpful.” She shot him a look, then turned back to Ben. “I have options.”

“Options?”

“Oh, I’ve been thinking about this for a while. You know Sarah, right? Redhead, super nice, loves dogs.”

“My mom used to call me by our farm dog’s name. I’m not dating a dog person.”

“Okay, so not Sarah. What about Leah? She’s funny, loves hiking—”

“Nope. Leah Ralston smeared glitter all over my face last time I saw her.”

“Fine. No family names. Then Katie. Works in PR, super organized—”

“Ah, see, that’s a problem. I’m a disaster. It’d never work.”

“I refuse to believe you’re this picky.”

“Lucy, you ever think maybe I just don’t need your help?”

“No,” she said at once.

“Let me get this straight,” Matt said. “You’ve had a roster ready to go, and this is when you bring it up?”

“I had to see if he could mess things up on his own first.”

“See? Your research checks out.”

“Okay, one more.”

“Lucy—”

“Hannah. She’s an ER nurse. She’s smart, pretty, and knows how to keep people alive. Which, frankly, seems like a skill you need in a partner.”

“So… basically me, then,” Matt said.

“Right, pretty boy,” Ben said.
“Shut up, Matt,” Lucy said, right on top of him.

Matt opened his mouth, but Ben was faster. “Okay, Lucy, I’ll make you a deal.”

“This oughta be good,” she said.

“I’ll go on a date when he stops finding reasons to stay past shift change.”

“They’re not reasons if they’re valid.”

“And there you have it.”

Lucy groaned. Matt reached for his beer.

“So, what’s the plan for all those eligible women now?”

She kicked him under the table.
